A little sand between the toes always takes away the woes!
Sun, sea and sand is food for the soul. The blue waters, frothy waves, sound of the crashing waves, rising and setting sun, happy faces and merry environment cheers up everyone who visits a beach. A holiday by the sea is definitely the best way to embrace nature’s gift to mankind. It relaxes the sinews and also calms the mind. A trip to the beach is recommended equally for both the young and the old!
Beach lovers pour their heart out to the sea. I often mull over things by the beach, and there seems to be a better logical expression to my mundane thoughts when I am sitting on the warm sand and carelessly building sand castles or throwing sea shells on the sea shore. It feels good to look at the waves crash on the shore, again and again and ponder over random nothings!
I visited the Marari Beach at Alleppey, Kerala last week and lazed the whole afternoon under a beach umbrella, enjoying the delightful sea breeze, looking at the wonders of nature and watching others enjoy the scenic beauty. I realized that there are so many subtle messages which nature silently conveys to us. The sea teaches us many valuable life lessons.
1. The best things in life do not come with a price tag
A view of the golden rays of the morning sun scintillating the waters of the sea is a beautiful sight to behold. The view is priceless. And comes with no additional cost or frills. So is a smile. So is love.
2. There are sunny days and cloudy days
All days are not the same. Just like happiness and sadness keeps fluctuating like the waves of a sine curve, there are good days and bad days experienced by one and all. Even you and me. And we have to accept this crude fact and move on, without letting it bother us.
3. The clouds cannot obscure the light given by the sun
So if you have come to terms with the fact that there are sunny days and cloudy days, also remember that the sun continues to shine from behind the clouds and the clouds can only partially obscure its brightness. It is still day even if the sun is playing hide and seek with the clouds.
4. Throw that baggage of worries and woes
I am sure the SEA has its own set of problems. And I love the way she handles it. She just crashes all the worries, anxieties and troubles to the sea shore and is worry-free!
5. The vastness of the sea cannot be measured by the naked human eye
The sea and the ocean is a vast expanse of water. I wish people come out of their jealousy and greed and crude ways and be as open minded and accommodating like the sea! I wish we could all be as generous! Trivial issues really have no place in this journey of life. The more baggage you carry, the heavier the mind and slower the journey!
6. Give back what you take
The sea, always throws back whatever the waters take away with it. Yes, it is true. It probably returns the ‘gifts’ at a later point of time and at some other shore, but it returns things in due time. Similarly, give back to the society. Give back to the people you love. You need not pay back by giving a six digit sum of money. At times, a smile, patient hearing and love is all one expects from you.
7. There is a time for everything
Yes! You can wait all day in front of the sea and witness beautiful scenic views. However, the wallpaper material sunset does not happen everyday! There is a right place and a right time for each and everything. But that does not mean that the sun sets once in a blue moon. The sun sets everyday. Similarly, you need to do your work diligently everyday. Success will come to you at the moment when it seems right, but till then, you must keep striving.
8. Remain grounded
It is extremely important to have your head on your shoulders. You must remain grounded to tackle the bigger waves on a stormy evening. Sway with the waves and make way if needed, but remain firm and grounded. Your ethics and values shape you and these qualities define you. The one quality which most leaders possess is that of being modest and humble.
9. Don’t judge a book by its cover
What you see of others, is only the tip of the iceberg. You have absolutely no idea of how big and dangerous the iceberg is unless you look beneath the water. What you see is definitely not what you get.
10. Pride comes before a fall
The ocean teaches us this lesson with the classic example of Titanic. The ship with its robust features was supposed to be the most elite and greatest of its times, and the ship was believed to be unsinkable. The irony of life is such that there was a declaration during the inaugural launch of the ship which claimed that even God himself cannot sink this ship. The inevitable disaster occurred during the maiden voyage of this magnanimous ship from Southampton to New York City, and the rest as they say is history!
The afore mentioned life lessons cannot be imparted by merely teaching the meaning of these phrases and idioms to a child. The seed to these lessons of life should be inculcated at childhood so that these ideas germinate while the child grows. The child would eventually understand the depth of these phrases with time and experiences. And what better way than playfully introducing these thoughts during a conversation at the beach while building a sand castle!
Over the years, your child will grow out of those expensive branded clothes and break those costly toys. The child will be bored of a play station and video games and those dolls and barbies would be packed and stored at the attic. The fond memories of a vacation and the quality bonding time with family is what will linger in their mind.
I urge you to hit the beach and take frequent breaks to spice up your life and fill it with joy. All work and no play makes Jack a mere toy!
